RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's volleyball team earned two 3-0 victories over Lincoln (Pa.) and Virginia Union on day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) round-up on Saturday in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.


The Lady Bears (10-5, 7-0 CIAA) swept the Lady Lions () by the scores of 25-13, 25-12 and 25-14 before earning a victory over the Lady Panthers () by the scores of 25-20, 25-10 and 25-23.


Kelly Murphy (Mukwango, WI) finished the day with 35 total kills, including 18 against Lincoln and 17 against Virginia Union. She also tallied 12 digs against VUU, while Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) tallied 17 kills (9 vs. LU, 8 vs. VUU). Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) combined for 84 assists on the day and Tiffany Brooks registered 31 digs total in the two matches.


Shaw 3, Lincoln (Pa.) 0


SU got off to a quick start to lead 4-2 but Lincoln took the lead at 7-6 after an attack error on Shaw. The Lady Bears then scored four-straight points to force the Lady Lions to call a timeout. Shaw continued to pounce on LU, stretching its lead to 10-19. The Lady Bears scored six unanswered points to cruise to the 25-13 win.


The Lady Bears were strong in the early going in the second frame. After a 10-2 lead, LU had no answer for Shaw as the Lady Bears glided to a commanding 25-12 set win.


In the third game, Shaw rooted a 4-1 lead but the Lady Lions wrestled to stay within one twice with the last time showing the score 14-13 in favor of SU. From there, the Lady Bears scored seven-straight and was able to maintain control in route to the 24-14 victory and 3-0 sweep.


Shaw 3, Virginia Union 0


The Lady Bears raced out to an 8-3 lead to begin the match and never looked back, using a four-point cushion to extend the margin to 17-13. VUU pulled within three points but Shaw answered back with a 4-0 run before taking the set win, 25-20.


Shaw overwhelmed the Lady Panthers in the second, beginning the stanza with a 6-2 margin before extending it to 17-6 with eight unanswered points. Two back-to-back miscues on VUU secured the set win, 25-10 for Shaw.


In the third set, Shaw took a 6-5 lead and managed to keep a lead as large as two points before scoring six unanswered points to stretch the lead 17-11. VUU got within two points late but thanks to a kill by Wattley and Murphy, Shaw was able to come out with the 25-23 win and 3-0 sweep.


Shaw will return to action on Sunday, Oct. 2 to conclude the CIAA Round-Up with a contest versus Bowie State at 11 a.m. in Spaulding.
