SPARTANBURG, SC – The Shaw University women's volleyball team was not going to leave Hannah Gymnasium without a victory on Tuesday night. The Lady Bears earned a hard-fought 3-0 (26-24, 25-22 and 27-25) non-conference victory over Converse College.
As the Lady Bears (8-5 overall, 5-0 CIAA) have done in close games all season, they played to the edge of each set. The opening frame was an exchange of points the entire way until a kill by Morghan Robinson (Anaheim, CA) and an error from the Valkyries (1-11, 0-5 CC) gave the Lady Bears the set win.
In the second frame, Shaw took a commanding 15-8 lead before Converse scored nine unanswered points to take the lead. The contest was tied four times before Shaw sprouted a 3-1 run to secure the set win.
In similar fashion to the first set, both teams battled back and forth but its final tie came at 25-25 after an attack error on Shaw. The next two possessions down, the Lady Bears scored off of a kill from Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) and Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) that lifted Shaw to its eight-straight win and 3-0 sweep of its opponent.
Murphy, Moten and Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) all notched nine kills apiece. Murphy also collected a team-best 12 digs, while Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) handed out a game-high 35 assists.
Shaw will return home to co-host the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up II with Saint Augustine's on Saturday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 2 in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The Lady Bears will face Lincoln (Pa.) at 12 noon and Virginia Union at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will conclude the round-up with a matchup against Bowie State at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
