RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team blanked Livingstone College 3-0 Thursday night in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium by scores of 25-13, 25-22 and 25-13. The win marks Shaw's six consecutive match win and improves the Lady Bears record to 6-5 overall, 4-0 in the CIAA and 1-0 in the Southern Division.
The sophomore tandem of Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) led Shaw in kills with 13 each, while CIAA Rookie of the Week Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) and fellow freshman Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) added 6 kills apiece. Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) posted an astounding 36 assist for the match while adding 6 digs. Tiffany Brooks (Effland, NC) led the Lady Bears defensively with 10 digs total.
Shaw jumped out to leads of 4-0 and 8-4 in the first set before forcing a Lady Blue Bears (5-4, 2-2 CIAA, 0-1 Division) timeout at 14-9. Shaw would finish the set in commanding fashion for the 25-13 win.
The second set saw the Lady Bears once again jump out to big leads of 4-1 and 12-4 but Livingstone responded with a 5-0 run to trim Shaw's lead to 12-9. The Lady Blue Bears would then tie the set at 15-15 before taking leads of 17-16 and 19-17 forcing a Lady Bears timeout. Shaw recovered after a timeout to retake the lead at 21-20 before closing out the set for the 25-22 victory.
The third and final set was all the Lady Bears as they led early 10-3. Shaw would then race out to a 21-11 lead before sealing the deal for the 25-13 win and 3-0 match victory.
Shaw will hit the road Monday, September 26th for a key CIAA Southern Division matchup with Johnson C. Smith. First serve is slated for 7pm in Brayboy Gymnasium.
