VOLLEYBALL WINS FIVE-SET THRILLER OVER CHOWAN

MURFREESBORO, NC  – The Shaw University women's volleyball team won a five-set thriller 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 15-7) over Chowan at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up hosted by the Hawks on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Shaw improves to 5-5 overall and 3-0 in the CIAA, while Chowan falls to 5-6 and 3-1 in conference play.

Shaw's depth was critical to outlasting the Hawks, as the Lady Bears got timely contributions from Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) as well as Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA). Murphy finished with 14 kills and eight digs, while Wattley contributed 11 kills and eight digs. Moten recorded a career-high 19 kills and two blocks, while Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) tallied nine and 12 digs. Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) returned with a match-high 43 assists in the win. Defensively, Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) registered 21 digs as ultimately, the win was a balanced effort from the reserves.

The match itself featured 16 ties, most of which came during the middle sets. The Hawks opened the contest with a controlling 25-20 set one win, going ahead on a kill by Courtney O'Keffe never looking back.

In set two, the Lady Bears took commanding 12-3 lead and kept its distance long enough to hold off the Hawks for the three-point set win. The Lady Bears topped CU in similar fashion in the third set after 5-1 run with the score 21-15 before scoring four unanswered points to win.

Momentum shifted in favor of the Hawks in the fourth set as Shaw led midway through but Chowan boosted a 5-1 run to take lead at 21-19. Despite a tie at 21-21, CU pulled off the set win after two errors from Shaw and a kill each from Morgan Spencer and Sydney Miller.

Shaw owned the fifth set, jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead behind kills from Wattley and Murphy. The Hawks got within one, 5-4 on a kill from O'Keefe but could get no closer. The Lady Bears hit .429 in the frame, tallying 10 kills on 21 attempts and just one error.

Shaw will continue conference play as the Lady Bears return home to host Livingstone on Thursday, Sept. 22 inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
