MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team picked up two wins on day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up at Chowan. In their opening match Shaw (4-5, 2-0 CIAA) defeated Virginia State (4-4, 0-1 CIAA) 3-1 and swept Elizabeth City State (0-6, 0-1 CIAA) 3-0.

The Lady Bears led 2-0 after the first two sets but the Trojans battled back to win the third set after scoring six unanswered points to lead 23-17 before securing the set win. Tied seven times in the fourth set, Shaw jumped ahead for good sparked by an error for the Trojans, following a kill from Murphy. The Lady Bears generated a 4-0 run en route to the win.
In the match, sophomore Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) led the attack with a match-high 14 kills, while sophomore Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) added eight and freshman Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX) tallied seven. Sophomore's Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) and Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) combined for 37 assists.
Shaw 3, Elizabeth City State 0
The Lady Bears were able to beat the Lady Vikings in straight sets, defeating ECSU 25-9, 25-10 and 25-13 to move to 2-0 in conference play. The contest was a team effort by Shaw as sophomore Morghan Robinson (Anaheim, CA) and freshman Amari Fletcher (Phoenix, AZ) both notched six kills apiece to lead the Lady Bears offensive attack. Robinson amassed five service aces, while Ngeve dished out a match-high 17 assists and junior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) registered 10 digs in the win.
Shaw will conclude the CIAA Volleyball Round-Up on Sunday, Sept. 18 with a much anticipated match against Chowan at 11 a.m.
