RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team earned its first win of the season in a non-conference match against Benedict College in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The Lady Bears defeated the Lady Tigers by scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-17.
Sophomore Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) led the Lady Bears with 10 kills, while sophomore Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) turned in nine and freshman Tapanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) added eight kills. Sophomore Christine Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) and freshman Alex Masnica (Chicago, IL) dished out 16 assists each and junior Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) had a team-best eight digs.
Shaw earned the win after suffering a 3-0 loss to St. Andrew's Wednesday, the win also snaps a five-game losing skid for the Lady Bears.
SU shot out to an early lead in the opening set, thanks to three errors on the Lady Tigers and key kills down the stretch from Murphy and Moten helped the Lady Bears take the first set.
Similar to the first set, Shaw jumped out to a 4-0 lead and scored six-straight points to close out the second set.
In the third set, Shaw used a 7-1 run to pull away midway through the set. Sophomore Morghan Robinson's (Anaheim, CA) eighth kill of the night gave the Lady Bears the match winner.
Shaw returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13th when they travel to Charlotte, NC to face Johnson & Wales in a non-conference match. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
