RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team fell to St. Andrews University, 3-0 in a non-conference match on Wednesday evening inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The Knights swept the Lady Bears in three sets, 25-20, 25-10 and 33-31.
With the loss, Shaw drops to 0-5 on the season, while St. Andrews improves to 2-4 on the year.
The Lady Bears were edged by the Knights 36-32 in kills and a hitting percentage of .173 compared to SU's .86. Shaw was also topped in service aces 9-2 and turned in a 9-6 serving error ratio comparison.
SAU jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the opening set before the Lady Bears rallied to tie the set at 6-6. St. Andrews then pushed its lead out to 16-11 before closing out the set 25-20. The Knights dominated the second stanza, jumping out to leads of 12-6 and 19-7 before winning the second set in strong fashion 25-10.
Set three would see multiple runs filled with exciting rallies that would bring the Shaw faithful's in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium to their feet. Shaw emerged to leads of 5-2 and 8-3 before forcing the Knights to take a timeout. The timeout would prove effective as St. Andrews would trim the Lady Bears lead to 11-8 before tying the set at 14-14. The Knights would then take a 17-15 advantage before the Lady Bears raced back to tie the set at 23-all. The teams went point for point in the final moments of the contest before St. Andrews orchestrated a three-point run to win the final set, 33-31.
Angelica Arroyo paced the Knights with 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks assisted, followed by Lindsey Wagner with seven kills and six digs. Defensively, Nora Darrhar tabbed a game-high 17 digs.
The Lady Bears return to action Saturday, September 10th at home versus Benedict College. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
