WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team opened its 2016 season falling in three sets to Millersville and Daemen University.
Three players combined for a total of 10 kills each on the day, including sophomore Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI), freshman Topanga Moten (New Orleans, LA) and freshman Aisja Jones (Red Oak, TX). Sophomore Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) tallied 10 assists in both matches for Shaw.
The Lady Bears are now 0-2 in season play, while both the Marauders and Wildcats improved to 1-1 on the day.
Match 1: Millersville 3, Shaw 0
The Lady Bears tallied 21 kills compared to the Marauders 33 kills (.338 hitting percentage) in the three set setback. Tied 4-4 in the opening set, Millersville went on a 7-0 run that the Lady Bears were unable to relinquish.
In the second set, Shaw found themselves trailing early, 7-1 before a rally brought the Lady Bears within in one point and eventually a tie at 14-all but for the remainder of the set, SU got within three. The Lady Bears led twice in the third set but it was the Marauders who would cease control and cruise to the set win.
Match 2: Daemen 3, Shaw 0
Shaw never recovered in the opening set after trailing 8-1 and 12-2. The Lady Bears had only four kills and six errors on 22 total attacks. Similar to the first set, Shaw trailed 12-3 and would only get as close as five points in the second set before producing a total of three kills in the final set.
The Lady Bears will be back in action Saturday (Sept. 3) taking on West Chester at 10 a.m. and West Virginia Wesleyan at 12 p.m. to conclude tournament play.
