FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team has advanced to the 2015 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship after winning a five-set thriller over the defending CIAA Champions – the Hawks of Chowan University on Saturday afternoon in Felton J. Capel Arena.
Shaw improves to 21-10 overall and will play Winston-Salem State University on Sunday, Nov. 22nd in the CIAA Championship match. First serve is slated for 1 p.m.
The last time the Lady Bears competed for a CIAA Championship was in 2001-2002.
CIAA Player of the Year, Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) led all players with 23 kills and 18 digs, while Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) tallied 16 kills and three solo blocks and Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) handed out a match-high 38 assists.
The Lady Bears took the first set 25-17 but would come up short in the second (25-21) before giving up the third (25-9). SU would rally back in the fourth as they managed to clip the Hawks 25-22 before taking a control in the fifth set in route to a 15-9 win.
The last time Shaw won a CIAA title was during the 1995-1996 season.
