VOLLEYBALL POWERS PAST VIRGINIA UNION, ADVANCES TO CIAA SEMI-FINAL MATCH

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Shaw University volleyball team pulled out a 3-0 victory against Virginia Union University on Friday evening to advance to the CIAA Semi-Final match on Friday evening.  The Lady Bears advance with a 20-10 overall record while the Lady Panthers end the season with a 14-11 record.

Shaw edged Virginia Union 27-25 in the opening match and grabbed a 25-12 win in set two before topping the Lady Panthers 25-10 in the final set. 

Fernanda Faustino led the Lady Panthers with eight kills in the setback.  Esha Atkins tallied 17 assists while Natalia Gascot notched 15 digs in the contest. 

Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) led all players in the contest with 12 kills for Shaw.  Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) and Ladazia Burris (Mt. Holly, NC) each added seven kill in the victory while Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) notched 31 assists.  Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) and Courtnie Cook (Okinawa, Japan) both grabbed 11 digs for the Lady Bears. 

The contest started with a fierce battle for momentum and control as neither team mustered a lead of more than four points in the first set.  With the score knotted 25-25 late in the set, a kill by Briana Wilson and a Virginia Union attack error secured the 27-25 victory for the Lady Bears. 

The Lady Panthers were unable to recover from the setback and trailed 2-0 at the start of the second set.  Virginia Union battled back to knot the score 10-10 at the midway point before a service error and kill by Murphy restored the advantage (12-10) in favor of the Lady Bears.   Shaw closed out the set with a 13-2 run to earn a 25-12 victory in set two. 

The third set was all about the Lady Bears.  With the score tied 5-5, Shaw held Virginia Union to just five points in the remainder of the contest to secure the 25-10 win off of Wilson's kill. 

Shaw will take on Chowan University in the CIAA Semi-Final match on Saturday.  First serve is slated for 3 p.m. in Capel Arena.
