RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep at home in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action on Monday. The Lady Bears won it using set scores 25-20, 25-19, and 25-23, moving to 18-10 overall and 11-4 in the CIAA. Fayetteville State falls to 11-11, 9-6 in conference play.
The Lady Bears hit .241 as a team, holding the Lady Broncos to just .073 attack. Freshman Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) tallied 14 kills, hitting .267 and collecting seven digs. Junior Deja Simpson (Orlando, FL) had seven kills and junior Briana Wilson (Columbia, SC) added six kills. Freshman Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) finished the evening with 28 assists.
Through a tight first set, the Lady Bears held a slim lead going up 7-5 before building a seven-point lead midway through until FSU fought back to tie at 21 even. The next play would give the Lady Broncos the lead after a bad set but the Lady Bears would rally back to score three unanswered points to take the set victory.
The second set was very close as the Lady Bears went on a mini-run to force FSU to call a timeout. From there SU's lead would go up to seven points as Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) drilled a kill from Olmeda-Gonzalez to ice the victory.
As the third set got underway, both teams continued to fight hard but SU would anchor a 19-15 lead midway with the Lady Bears taking control. However, FSU clawed their way back in to score four unanswered points to force the Lady Bears to call a timeout but the night belonged to SU as they managed to close out the set with a kill from Wattley.
Shaw returns to action on Friday at home, hosting cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University at 7 p.m. for senior night.
