VOLLEYBALL TAKES TWO, DAY ONE OF CIAA ROUND-UP

LINCOLN, Pa.  – The Shaw University women's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins over Lincoln (Pa.) University and Virginia Union University to open day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Round-Up on Saturday (Oct. 31). The Lady Bears defeated the Lincoln (Pa.) 3-1, and then turned around to blank Virginia Union 3-0 in match two.

 

The Lady Bears took down the Lady Lions in match one after opening the first set 25-16 but falling 25-13 in the second after hitting -.48 in the set. SU would recover in set three 25-20 before claiming a 25-11 advantage in set four. Leading the way in the victory was Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) with 16 kills, following Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) with 14 and Briana Wilson (Columbia, SC) adding eight.

 

Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) dished out 41 assists, while Courtnie Cook (Okinawa, Japan) and Deja Simpson (Orlando, FL) collected 16 and 13 digs, respectively.

 

In match two, SU blanked the Lady Panthers (25-17, 25-19, and 25-14). Murphy registered a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs to pace the Lady Bears.

 

Wattley hauled in 11 kills while Olmeda-Gonzalez handed out 36 assists.

 

Shaw will return to action on Sunday to take on Bowie State. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
