SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Down two sets, the Shaw University women's volleyball rallied from behind to secure a 3-2 victory over Converse College in a non-conference five set thriller on Tuesday evening.
Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) led the Lady Bears with a match-high 24 kills and 11 digs, while Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) tallied 14 kills and three blocks. Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) led all setters, dishing out 47 assists to go along with 10 digs, while Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) hauled in 21 digs and Courtnie Cook (Okinawa, Japan) added 15 digs.
The Lady Bears (14-9 overall) opened up the match, falling the first two sets 21-25 and 22-25 to the Valkyries to take the 0-2 disadvantage. SU would battle back to take sets three and four before winning the fifth and final set 15-13.
In the fourth set, the Lady Bears built a four-point lead but Converse clawed their way back in the game to tie at 24-all. SU would survive to win the set after an attack error from the Valkyries before a kill by Deja Simpson (Orlando, FL).
In the final set, the Lady Bears jumped out early to a 6-2 lead that would result in a Converse timeout but the Valkyries would rally back to bring them within one point. From there, SU maintained their composure and continued to make plays until they committed two attack errors that would give Converse a chance to stay alive; however, it would be the Lady Bears who would come out on top with the 15-13 advantage.
Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 31st through Sunday, Nov. 1st to compete in the CIAA Round-Up held in Lincoln, Pa. The round-up will feature Bowie State, Lincoln, Virginia Union, Fayetteville State and Saint Augustine's.
