CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) had 12 kills as the Lady Bears of Shaw University earned a 3-0 sweep against the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) contest on Monday night inside Brayboy Gymnasium.
SU (13-9 overall, 7-3 CIAA) bounced back from Saturday's non-conference loss to Limestone College by pounding 42 kills compared to JCSU's (3-15 overall, 1-9 CIAA) 26.
With the win, the Lady Bears post a 6-1 record in divisional play, while the Lady Golden Bulls drop to 0-7 in the division.
The Lady Bears opened up the first set with a 5-0 lead before JCSU finally got on board after Jana Ajdukovic earned a kill. SU would build on a 10-point lead to claim the 25-10 victory.
In the second set, SU went on a mini-run to force the Lady Golden Bulls to take a timeout with the score in favor of the Lady Bears (11-7). Five errors by the Lady Bears gave JCSU a chance to not only tie the set but take the lead before SU stormed back with a 21-20 advantage, including an 8-0 run to secure the 25-20 win.
Hoping for a different outcome, JCSU opened up the third set with a 10-5 lead before the Lady Bears pulled together to tie the game at 11 all. From there both teams would battle it out as the score became tied four more times until Wattley had a kill from Deja Simpson (Orlando, FL) prior to an attack error by Makayla Adams to give the Lady Bears the set point and 28-26 victory.
Shaw will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 27th when they travel to Spartanburg, SC to face Converse College. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
