RALEIGH, NC - After a layoff due to inclement weather over the weekend, the Shaw University women's volleyball team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division matchup on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Whitaker Gymnasium.
While it's still early in the conference season, the match could have major implications as both teams are vying for the top spot in the league and are both undefeated so far in the division.
The Lady Bears (7-5 overall) will look to extend their winning streak to three straight, including a perfect 2-0 record in division play, blanking Johnson C. Smith 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-14) on Thursday, Sept. 28, before defeating Livingstone 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-18) on Sept. 24.
Offensively, Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) leads Shaw in kills with a total of 173 on the year, including a .231 hitting percentage and 3.76 kills per set. Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) charges the Lady Bears with 376 assists on the season for 8.74 assist per set and defensively, Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) paces SU with 150 digs and 3.26 digs per set thus far.
WSSU (8-4 overall) comes into Thursday's match unscathed in league play at 5-0 in the conference. Most recently, the Lady Rams upset Saint Augustine's in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-12) sweep on Sept. 28.
Teynia Sheperd leads the Lady Rams with an average of 2.83 kills per set, while Jasmine Smith has dished out 251 assists and Michel Murray-Garcia accounts for 119 digs on the season.
The matchup marks the first meeting on the season for both teams. Last season the Lady Bears were swept by the Lady Rams 3-0 in both meetings.
