RALEIGH, N.C. – After falling behind in the first set, the Shaw University women's volleyball team battled back to even the match in the fourth set but was not able to overcome Chowan, suffering the match 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13) on Sunday afternoon in CC Spaulding Gymnasium to conclude the 2015 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Round-Up.
The Lady Bears drop to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in the league, while the Hawks improve to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the CIAA.
Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) tallied 24 kills and eight digs, Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) added 14 kills and four digs, while Ladazia Burris (Mt. Holly, NC) finished with 11 kills. Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, PR) recorded her first double-double on the season with 54 assists and 12 digs in the setback.
Shaw grabbed an early lead over the Hawks but the set became tied at 21 even before Chowan ran away with the first set.
Both teams would exchange wins in the second and third set before the Lady Bears turned up the intensity during the fourth set to send the game into the fifth and final set.
The Lady Bears and Hawks went pound-for-pound until a late rally by Shaw caused Chowan to call a timeout with the score 14-13. However, the Hawks was able to hold on after Michelle Seiler scored to seal the win.
Suraya Chase led the Hawks with 14 kills and 16 digs, while Morgan Spencer added 13 kills and Becca Page dished out 26 assists.
Shaw will travel to Salisbury, NC on September 24th to face Livingstone. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
