VOLLEYBALL SPLITS DAY ONE OF CIAA ROUND-UP

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University women's volleyball team split the opening day of the 2015 Central Intercollegiate Round-Up, falling to Virginia State (3-2) but sweeping Elizabeth City State (3-0) on Saturday, September 19th in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

 

The Lady Bears suffered a loss to Virginia State by the scores of 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 15-25 and 15-13 but would recover with a win against Elizabeth City State 25-16, 25-20 and 25-16.

 

Shaw improves to 5-4 on the season and 1-1 in the league.

 

Against the Trojans, Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) and Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) combined for 29 kills on 66 attacks but it was not enough. Michelle Olemda Gonzalez added 35 assists, while Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) and Murphy tabbed 17 and 12 digs, respectively.

 

In the nightcap, the Lady Bears swept the Lady Vikings (3-0). Deja Simpson (Orlando, FL) and Murphy had seven kills apiece, followed by Christine Evette-Ngeve (Greensboro, NC) with 15 assists and Brooks with 17 digs.

 

Shaw will return to action on Sunday, September 20th to conclude the round-up versus the defending  CIAA champions of Chowan. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
