MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Freshman Kelly Murphy registered a double-double including 22 kills and 12 digs but the Lady Bears suffered a 3-1 setback to the Trojans of Mount Olive on Tuesday night inside Kornegay Arena.
The match snapped a three-game win streak for Shaw (4-3), while Mount Olive (1-8) got their first win on the season.
Freshman Morghan Robinson (Anaheim, CA)contributed 12 kills, freshman Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) dished out 50 assist and sophomore Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) had 17 digs in the loss.
The Lady Bears dropped sets one and two (25-20, 25-18) before fighting for life in the third set. SU managed to clinch set three, 29-27 but as the fourth set got midway through, the Lady Bears found themselves trailing 21-11.
Shaw would respond with four match points but Mount Olive answered with a kill by Sarah Watkins on the ensuing volley to halt the Lady Bears momentum on the way to a 25-18 win.
Britni Johnson led the Trojans with a double-double, 11 kills and 11 digs, while teammates Danielle Plante added 12 kills and Alysha Burnett contributed 10 digs.
Shaw will return to action on Saturday, September 19th when they start conference play beginning with Virginia State at 12 p.m. inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium for the CIAA Round-Up. The Lady Bears will also face Elizabeth City State at 6 p.m. on Saturday and Chowan on Sunday, September 20. First serve is slated for 11 a.m.
