RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University women's volleyball team picked up two wins over cross-town rival Saint Augustine's and Allen for their second tri-match on the season. The Lady Bears defeated SAU 3-1, and then turned around to beat Allen 3-1 in the final match.


The Lady Bears improve to 4-2 on the young season, one of their best starts since the 2002-2003 season and currently holds a three-game winning streak.


The Lady Bears took down Saint Augustine's in match one by scores of 25-18, dropping the second set 25-21 but winning sets three and four 25-11 and 25-14. Leading the way in the victory was freshman Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) who registered a near double-double with 16 kills and nine digs. Freshman Morghan Robinson (Anaheim, CA), Keveesha Wattley (St. Croix, VI) and junior Deja Simpson (Orlando, FL) all accounted for 10 kills each. Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez dished out 41 assists, while sophomore Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) aided 13 digs.


In match two, the Lady Bears won set one 25-14 but allowed the Lady Yellow Jackets to come back in set two with a 25-14 advantage. Shaw would claim sets three and four with ease as they cruised to a 25-10 and 25-17 victory.


Junior Briana Wilson (Columbia, SC) led the pack with 10 kills, following Murphy with nine kills and 11 digs. Olemda-Gonzalez added 18 assists and Brooks registered 14 digs.


Shaw returns to action on September 15, when they travel to Mount Olive. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
