RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University women's volleyball team split the day against Cheyney (PA) and Coker in the Lady Bears first tri-match and season opener inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Bears defeated the Lady Wolverines of Cheyney, 3-0 but dropped to the Cobras of Coker, 3-0 in the final contest of the day.

In the day's first contest, Shaw (1-1) accounted for 32 kills and 28 assists in the win. Freshman Kelly Murphy (Mukwonago, WI) paced the team with 12 kills, following freshman Morghan Robinson (Anaheim, CA) and Tamarea Townes (Beachwood, OH) with six kills apiece.

Defense stood tall for Shaw as they were able to hold the Lady Wolverines to -.109 hitting, while the team recorded 28 digs and two blocks in the match. With the three-set win, Shaw moved to 1-0 on the season, while Cheyney dropped to 0-1.

Against Coker (2-0), the Lady Bears gave up the first two sets 25-14 and 25-18. Set three was close the entire way but the Lady Bears effort would not be enough to seal the win as they dropped the 25-23 decision.

Murphy led the effort with 10 kills, while freshman Michelle Olmeda-Gonzalez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) paced with team-high 28 assists and sophomore Tiffany Brooks (Efland, NC) collected 15 digs.
