RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's outdoor track and field team spent all season preparing to compete in the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Championships this weekend that is scheduled for Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22 on the campus of Bowie State University in Bowie, Md.
Friday's action is slated to begin at 9 a.m. with the women's javelin and the day will conclude with its last event at 4:10 p.m. with the men's 5000 meter run. Competition will resume on Saturday at 9 a.m. and will wrap up Saturday evening with an awards ceremony scheduled for 4:10 p.m.
The Lady Bears are sending 14 student-athletes to Bowie, Md. this weekend. Freshman sensation, Tiara Derosa (Sandy's Bermuda) leads the way as she ranks first among all CIAA schools in the women's discus, with a throw of 44.78 meters. In the shot put, she ranks sixth overall (11.96 meters). Senior Destinee Williams (Leesburg, FL) ranks third among the CIAA in the 100 meter hurdles (14.18) and 10th in the 100 meter hurdles this season after a 12.31 at the 2017 Aggie Invitational this past weekend.
Senior Tiffany Martin follows Williams in the 100 meter hurdles at 15.16 which currently ranks her sixth overall in the CIAA as Shaw's 4x100 relay squad stands fourth in the CIAA after a finish time of 47.58 and its 4x400 relay team also ranks fourth at 4:06.98.
Shaw has showed balance and continued growth throughout the entire season and will look to improve upon a seventh place finish a season ago at the CIAA Championships.
