RALEIGH, NC – The Shaw University women's outdoor track and field team will open their outdoor season this weekend when it heads down south to Charlotte, NC to compete in the 49ers Classic Meet at Irwin Belk Track and Field Facility, hosted by UNC Charlotte.
Events will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, Mar. 17 with the women's hammer throw before the running events start at noon with the women's 100m hurdles. Results can be found on www.shawbears.com.
Shaw will be a part of a 20-team field that will also include CIAA foe, Johnson C. Smith. The Lady Bears will feature five newcomers and nine returners from a season ago, including senior Destinee Williams (Leesburg, FL), junior Tearra Arrington (Newport News, VA) and sophomore Kyla Sanders (Hampton, VA) who highlighted last season's efforts in several meets last season.
The Lady Bears are led first-year head coach Nadia Alexander-Pompey, who will look to improve upon Shaw's seventh place in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Outdoor Championships last season.
Following this weekend's events, Shaw will compete in the Fred Hardy Classic in Richmond, Va. on Mar. 25-26.
