CHARLESTON, WV – The No. 7 Shaw University women's tennis team had its 2018 season come to an end with a 5-0 setback to No. 4 West Virginia State at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional hosted by the WVSU at Coonskin Park.
The Lady Bears cap the season with a record of 21-3 overall. The NCAA postseason is the second-consecutive appearance for SU and third out of the last five seasons.
Shaw fell behind 3-0 after doubles competition and would not recover after the Yellow Jackets secured the clinching points with victories at No. 2 and No. 5 singles.
Senior Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Quebec) and senior Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) fell 8-3 at No. 1 doubles while sophomore Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and junior Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia) suffered a hard-fought 9-8 battle at No. 2. Senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) fell at No. 3, 8-5.
Mantecon and Aleem both suffered a 6-3, 6-2 setbacks at their respective positions.
West Va. State improves to 15-6 and advances to face Mercyhurst on Sunday, Apr. 29 in the regional title match.
