BOWIE, Md. – The Shaw University women's tennis team is the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Champions once again as the Lady Bears won the 2018 CIAA Women's Tennis Tournament Saturday, Apr. 21 on the campus of Bowie State University. SU, the No. 1 seeded topped No. 2 seeded Johnson C. Smith University, 5-0 in the championship final.
Shaw's 5-0 win over JCSU in the championship final had the Lady Bears win all three doubles matches and then take the first two singles matches to clinch the victory. Sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) won at No. 6 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win. The No. 1 singles matchup had the Lady Bears senior Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Quebec) top her opponent, 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the title.
Senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and Fekete won the day's first doubles with a 8-2 decision at No. 3 doubles while sophomore Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and junior Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia) took an 8-3 win at No.2 doubles. The two doubles victories followed up with 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles that featured senior duo Vanko and Marilyn Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon).
Vanko was later named the 2018 CIAA Women's Tennis Championship Most Valuable Player.
Shaw will automatically earn a bid into the 2018 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament. Selections for the tournament will be announced on Tuesday, Apr. 24 via web stream on www.shawbears.com.
