BOWIE, Md. – Shaw University women's tennis earned its fourth consecutive berth in the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship match after defeating Winston-Salem State(10-9), 5-1 in the semifinals Friday afternoon on the campus of Bowie State University.
Shaw will face No. 2 seeded Johnson C. Smith (16-10) in the title match on Saturday, Apr. 21 at 12 noon.
The Lady Bears (20-2) gathered a 2-1 lead after doubles competition led by junior Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia) and sophomore Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) who finished first at the No. 2 doubles for an 8-0 victory. Senior duo Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Quebec) Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) followed minutes later also taking an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles.
Senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) suffered a tough 8-6 setback at No. 3 doubles but the Lady Bears put together three-straights singles wins anchored by Mantecon who turned in a 6-0, 6-0 performance at No. 2 while Aleem redeemed herself with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5 and Vanko secured a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1.
