ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – The Shaw University women's tennis team went 2-0 at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Round-Up this past weekend hosted by Elizabeth City State University.
The Lady Bears (5-1) defeated both Virginia Union and Bowie State, 5-0 to improve to 3-0 against conference opponents to start the season.
Shaw got off to a dominating start against the Lady Panthers of VUU (0-2, 0-2 CIAA) with a 3-0 lead after doubles action. At the No. 1 doubles, freshman Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) and senior Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) earned a 8-2 victory over their opponents while junior Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) and sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) won 8-0 at the No. 2 while senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and junior Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia) grabbed an 8-0 win at No. 3.
Both Aleem and Martic won 8-0 in singles action of the No. 4 and 5 spots to cap the 5-0 victory for Shaw.
Against Bowie State (0-2, 0-2 CIAA), the Lady Bears struck first by winning all three doubles for the 3-0 lead. Martic claimed an 8-0 win at the No. 4 singles before the Lady Bulldogs forfeited at the No. six singles, giving Fekete the win and Shaw their third-consecutive conference victory.
Shaw will return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 13 with a home match versus Livingstone College. The tilt is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Worthdale Park.
