CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Shaw University women's tennis team scored its first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) victory of the young season in decisive fashion, winning 8-1 at Johnson C. Smith on Thursday.
The Lady Bears (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) swept doubles play, including an 8-1 victory at No. 3 by senior Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and junior Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia). Senior Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) and freshman Carmen Mantecon (Madrid, Spain) topped their opponents 8-6 at No. 1 doubles while junior Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) and sophomore Helena Fekete (Belgrade, Serbia) won 9-7 at the No. 2 doubles.
The Golden Bulls won the No. 1 singles, but Shaw didn't need the point, winning five of the remaining single matches. Mantecon, Kamegne, Martin, Aleem and Fekete won with at second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
Johnson C. Smith dropped to 4-6 overall, 0-1 in the CIAA while the Lady Bears improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
Shaw will return to action on Friday, Mar. 9 for a home contest with Fairmont State at 4 p.m. before competing in the CIAA Round-Up at Elizabeth City State Mar.10-11.
