BOWIE, Md. – The Shaw University women's tennis team will advance to its third consecutive appearance in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship Saturday, April 22 at the Bowie State University Tennis Courts against Chowan (20-8, 15-0 CIAA) at 10:30 a.m. after securing a 5-1 victory over Virginia State University Friday afternoon. The Lady Bears and Hawks will meet for the second time this season, CU defeated Winston-Salem State, 5-0 in the semifinal round to advance.
The Lady Bears (20-2, 13-1 CIAA) took a 2-1 lead over the Trojans after doubles action, Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Quebec) and Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) won the No. 1 doubles by the score of 8-2 and No. 3 doubles duo Andrijana Martic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) secured an 8-1 decision.
In singles competition, Kamegne tallied a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 3 singles while Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia) and Aleem both registered 6-0, 6-0 victories at the No. 6 and 5 singles, respectively.
Shaw will have a chance to redeem themselves from a season ago and earlier in the year when the Lady Bears were defeated by the Hawks 5-2 in the title match in 2016. In fact, SU's lone loss in the conference came from CU back on Mar. 25. That setback also snapped a seven game win-streak earlier on the year as the Lady Bears have not loss since then.
The last time Shaw won a CIAA women's tennis title was 2015 against Chowan, 5-3.
