VANKO AND FEKETE EARN CIAA WOMEN’S TENNIS HONORS

BOWIE, Md. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) announced its Women's Tennis regular season honors Thursday that featured Shaw University's own Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Quebec) and Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia).

 

Vanko, was named to the 2017 CIAA Women's All-Conference Tennis Team after an outstanding record of 16-1 in singles action (11-1 within the CIAA) and 16-2 mark in doubles, including an 11-1 record in singles within the league at the No. 1 position.

 

Fekete was named the 2017 Rookie of the Year after going undefeated in the CIAA at 10-0 in singles action at the No. 6 singles this season. She concluded the regular season with an overall record of 13-2 in singles competition while posting a 14-4 record in doubles and an 11-1 stand within conference doubles.

 

Polina Novachuk of Chowan was named the Most Outstanding Women's Tennis student-athlete while the Hawks also received the CIAA Team Academic Award with a team grade point average of 3.545. Linda Person of Virginia State was named CIAA Coach of the Year.

 

Shaw defeated Elizabeth City State Thursday afternoon to advance to the second round of the CIAA Women's Tennis Championships. The Lady Bears will meet Virginia State Friday, April 21 at 10:30 a.m. at the Bowie State University tennis courts.
