SHAW WOMEN’S TENNIS TO COMPETE IN 2017 CIAA CHAMPIONSHIP THURSDAY, LADY BEARS TO MEET ELIZABETH CITY STATE IN FIRST ROUND

BOWIE, Md. – The Shaw University women's tennis team will compete in the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference Championship as the No. 2 seed and will face Elizabeth City State, the No. 7 seed in the first round of the tournament on Thursday, April 20 at the Bowie State University Tennis Courts. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.

This marks the second year that the Lady Bears rank second overall in the tournament and Thursday's match will be the second meeting between the two schools this season. The Lady Bears will look to make its third consecutive appearance in the championship match after falling to the defending champions, Chowan a season ago by the score of 5-2.

Advancement in the tournament will be determined by Thursday's matches. The winner of the match between Shaw and ECSU (3-10, 3-10 CIAA) will continue action Friday, April 21 against the winner of archrivals No. 3 Virginia State and No. 6 Virginia Union.

The Lady Bears (18-2, 11-1 CIAA) ended the regular season by winning nine-straight, six of which were conference matches all by the scores of 9-0.
