WOMEN’S TENNIS HOLDS OFF BLUEFIELD COLLEGE, 6-3

BLUEFIELD, Va. – The Lady Bears of the Shaw University women's tennis team picked up a road victory Tuesday afternoon, defeating Bluefield College, 6-3 in a non-conference tilt.

Shaw moves to 16-2 overall while BC falls to 4-6 on the season.

Similar to the men's, Shaw 's first point came at the No. 3 doubles by duo Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade) who took an 8-0 victory but the Lady Bears trailed 2-1 heading into singles competition after falling 9-7 at the No. 1 doubles and 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Shaw won five of the six singles to pull away with the win after Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Canada) fought hard for a 6-4, 7-6 decision at the No. 1 singles. Marilyne Kamegne (Yaoundé, Cameroon) grabbed a 6-4, 6-3 in at the No. 3 slot while Martic claimed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 4 singles.

Aleem and Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia) tallied wins at fifth (6-2, 6-2) and sixth (6-0, 6-0) singles, respectively.

Shaw will be back in action Saturday, April 8 at West Virginia Wesleyan with a start time scheduled for 2 p.m.
