WOMEN’S TENNIS OPENS SPRING SEASON WITH 9-0 WIN OVER MEREDITH

RALEIGH, NC – Shaw University women's tennis team opened the Spring portion of its 2016-17 schedule with a 9-0 victory over Meredith College Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Bears improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Angels drop to 1-3 overall.

Shaw swept the doubles matches to get off to a quick 3-0 lead. Daniela Vanko (Montreal, Canada) and Marilyne Kamegne (Yaounde, Cameroon) won at the No. 1 doubles to start the match.

Helena Fekete (Subotica, Serbia) and Teodora Jovanovic (Nis, Serbia) won at the No. 2 doubles 8-1 and Simbiat Aleem (Lagos, Nigeria) and Andrijana Martic (Belgrade) won 8-1 at the No. 3 doubles.

Vanko won 6-2 and 6-1 at the No. 1 singles, while Jovanovic made it 7-6, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles. Kamegne took the No. 3 singles by the scores of 6-4 and 6-3 before Martic claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 singles.

Aleem won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Fekete wrapped up her match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 at Pfeiffer with a first serve slated for 2 p.m.
