Women's Tennis Earns Semifinal Bid With 5-0 Win Over Saint Augustine's
PETERSBURG, Va. —The Shaw University women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the CIAA Tournament with an easy 5-0 victory over Saint Augustine's at the Virginia State tennis courts.
Shaw, the number one seed, earned two points from Saint Augustine's forfeits at the number three doubles and number six singles spots.
The number one double tandem of Michelle Hart and Jessica Medina downed Minyan Murphy and Kenisha Donaldson 8-1. At number two doubles, Gislaine Farias and Claudia Silva swept Cianna Fisher and Tiana Morris 8-0.
Leading 4-0, Shaw needed only one win in singles to claim the best-of-nine format match. Medina was the first to report her score, claiming a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Donaldson at number two singles.
The win improves Shaw's record to 21-2 overall. They finished regular season CIAA play with a perfect 16-0 mark.
Tomorrow, the Lady Bears will play Winston-Salem State for the right to advance to the finals. Shaw is looking to claim their third title in four years - with the only loss in that time coming to WSSU. The match should begin at approximately 11:00 a.m., directly following the Chowan-Virginia State matchup which begins at 9:00 a.m.
