RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's soccer team closed out their regular season posting a program record of 12 wins with a 4-2 victory over Newberry College Sunday afternoon at the MAC Sports and Entertainment Complex.
The Wolves took an early 1-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of action with a goal from Daphne Heyaime. The Lady Bears responded at the 31:28 mark when freshman Seana Finn (Valrico, FL) scored her first career goal off a pass from junior Teffie-Ann Browne (Kingstown, St. Vincent).
The Lady Bears would end up taking a 2-1 lead at halftime thanks to Browne who scored two minutes after Finn's goal.
In the second half, Shaw picked up where they left off when freshman Jasa Curry (Ellicott City, MD) drilled one to the back of the net at the 51st minute. Newberry chipped at the Lady Bears lead when Heyaime registered her second goal of the day but it was short lived as Curry capped off the victory with a penalty kick that shifted passed the goalkeeper into the right side net at the 78th minute.
Shaw finished with a 19-14 shot advantage led by Curry who recorded six shots, four on goal while freshman Philine Diekhoff (Hamburg, Germany) tallied three shots, two on goal and one assist.
Sophomore Shianne Duplantis (West Palm Beach, FL) earned the victory to improve to 5-1 with five saves on the day.
The Lady Bears conclude the season with a 12-4 overall record under the direction of Matt Brown in his first season.
