LADY BEARS FALL TO LINCOLN (PA) MONDAY NIGHT

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team fell 80-61 to the visiting Lady Lions of Lincoln (Pa.) University on Monday night in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division action. The loss dips the Lady Bears to 3-12 overall and 0-7 in the CIAA while LUPA improves to 9-9 on the season and 3-4 in the league standings.

Junior Lynah Bontiff (Dominica, WI) recorded her first double-double of the season with a career-high 18 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks while freshman Taylor Royster (Cleveland, OH) hauled in a season-high 13 points and junior Victoria Swanson (Monmouth, OR) added 10 points, four rebounds and three steals for Shaw.

In the opening quarter, Shaw fought off an eight-point deficit and eventually took a lead 21-18 lead on a 12-3 run led by Royster's eight points in the spurt. The Lady Bears scored eight unanswered points to start the second quarter – creating a lead of 11 points (29-18) over Lincoln (Pa.) before the Lady Lions responded with a 11-0 run that tied the game at 29-even with 3:30 left in the first half.

Shaw was able to hold a 34-33 lead at the break thanks to 5-4 scoring margin in the last 2:59 of the second stanza.

The Lady Bears led for over one minute until a layup from Kwanza Murray gave LUPA a lead they would not relent in the third quarter. The Lady Lions outscored Shaw 24-11 to lead 45-17 to start the fourth quarter and in that frame, the Lady Bears faced a 24-point deficit that they would not overcome down the stretch.

Murray finished with a game-high 21 points and nine rebounds to lead LUPA while Jamari Tillman and Alisia Machado contributed 18 and 15 points, respectively.

Inside the boxscore featured just three lead changes and four ties as the Lady Lions recorded 33 points off the Lady Bears 28 turnovers. LUPA held a 15-9 ratio in second chance opportunities.

Shaw will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 16 with a home contest against Paine College in a nonconference tilt. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Spaulding.
