LADY BEARS KEEN SCORES 28 IN 75-55 LOSS TO NATIONALLY RANKED VIRGINIA UNION

RALEIGH, N.C.   The Shaw University women's basketball team was defeated by nationally ranked Virginia Union, 75-55 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division contest Thursday night inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

Junior Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) scored a team-best and career-high 28 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Bears who fall to 3-10 overall and 0-5 in CIAA action.

Shareka McNeill who charted 34 points while Nicole Floyd added 17 points and six rebounds led VUU now 12-1 on the year and 3-1 in CIAA action. Bianca Lockamy contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds while Jasmine Carter tallied 13 rebounds and seven points in the Lady Panthers effort.

VUU took an early 16-3 stand over Shaw in the first quarter before a tip-in from junior Lynah Bontiff (Dominica, WI) trimmed the offensive attack to 11 but the Lady Panthers earned a 18-7 lead at the end of the frame.

The Lady Bears cut the deficit to single digits in the second quarter led by Keen who scored six of the Lady Bears 7-4 spurt but VUU ballooned a lead as large as 18 after producing a 14-4 run that led to a 38-21 lead over Shaw at halftime.

In the second half, Shaw managed to outscore the Lady Panthers 21-19 in the third quarter despite trailing by 22 points at the 6:19 mark. A jumper from Keen at the end of the third stanza saw a Lady Bears deficit of 57-42 heading into the fourth.

The Lady Bears got within 13 points in the fourth quarter but that would be the closets they would get for the duration of the game as VUU registered six-straight points to secure the win over Shaw.

For the contest, VUU held a 29-7 ratio in points off turnovers, 22-9 frame in second chance opportunities and added 10 points in fast breaks.

Shaw will return to action Saturday, Jan. 12 against Bowie State for another CIAA cross division contest. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. in Spaulding.
