SHAW HOOPS TO BEGIN HOME STRETCH, HOSTS VIRGINIA UNION THURSDAY

RALEIGH, N.C.   Shaw University men's and women's basketball will begin a home stretch of five games, starting on Thursday, Jan. 10 when the Bears and Lady Bears host Virginia Union University Thursday, Jan. 10 with the women's game at 6 p.m., followed by the men's game at 8 p.m. in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) action.

As a community service initiative, the Shaw Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C) will be hosting a sock drive for those in need and has asked fans, alumni and supporters to bring new socks over a course of the men's and women's basketball home stretch beginning Thursday to donate to the local homeless shelters in the Raleigh area.

Admission for the doubleheader is $15. Non-Shaw students with valid school ID is $10. All currently enrolled Shaw student is free with school ID.

The Lady Bears enter Thursday's game with a 3-9 overall record and 0-4 in the CIAA this season. Shaw is coming off a 77-67 loss at Claflin Monday. Senior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) leads the Lady Bears in scoring 17.8 points per game while senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) adds 16.1 points.

The Bears hope to snap a five game losing skid against Virginia Union Thursday night. Shaw is 5-7 overall and 1-3 in CIAA action after falling to Claflin, 65-61 in their last outing. Junior Amir Hinton (Philadelphia, PA) leads the team in scoring, averaging 32.2 points while junior Davon Dillard (Gary, IN) and junior DaVaughn Kelsie (Richmond, VA) both contribute 12.8 and 12.1 points, respectively.

The nationally ranked women's basketball team for VUU heads to Spaulding with an 11-1 overall record a 2-1 CIAA mark. VUU has won their last three games including dominating 77-38 win over Johnson C. Smith on Jan. 7. Shareka McNeill leads the way with 23.0 points per game while Nicole Floyd and Ifunanya Okoye are responsible for 11.6 and 10.7 points per outing.

Similar to the Bears, VUU's men's squad owns a record of 5-7 overall but the Panthers are 2-1 in league action. In their last outing, the Panthers were defeated by Queens University of Charlotte, 102-85 but defeated JCSU back in December for their last conference competition. VUU has three players averaging double figures led by Demarius Pitts (17.0), William Jenkins (14.3) and Terrell Leach (13.0).
