ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Four Shaw University women's basketball player's tallied double figures in scoring but the Lady Bears fell 77-67 to Clalfin University Monday night in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest.
Junior Macy Keen (Fort Lauderdale, FL) led the Lady Bears effort with 15 points and 12 rebounds – her fourth double-double of the season while senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Both sophomore Keyonte Cherry (Rocky Mount, NC) and freshman Taylor Royster (Cleveland, OH) contributed 10 points each to round out the double figure scoring for Shaw.
The loss dips the Lady Bears to 3-9 overall, 0-4 in the CIAA and 0-2 in the Southern Division while Claflin improves to 8-8 on the year, 6-4 in the league and 3-2 in the South.
Shaw took off with a 12-0 lead in the first quarter but the Lady Panthers responded by scoring 12-straight to give the game its first tie of the night with 3:55 left. Claflin used a 15-9 spurt to lead 25-21 over Shaw heading into the second quarter.
The Lady Bears trailed by as many as 10 points midway through the second stanza until a 3-pointer from senior Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) led to a 7-0 run for Shaw as the Lady Bears trailed 37-32 to the Lady Panthers at the break.
A controversial third quarter got the best of Shaw as the Lady Bears were outscored 25-18, including a 13-point lead for Claflin capped off by three free throws that provided some cushion the Lady Panthers entering the fourth quarter.
Shaw trimmed at the double digit deficit several times but was unable to capitalize down the stretch as Claflin's free throw shooting kept the Lady Bears at bay.
Dashia Jackson led Claflin in scoring with a game-high 26 points and six rebounds while Ashley Fields chipped in 23 points, 11 rebounds, six steals and five rebounds.
Shaw will return to the courts on Thursday, Jan. 10 with a home contest against nationally-ranked Virginia Union University inside the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
