CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Shaw University women's basketball team battled and fought hard but the Lady Bears were knocked out the first round of the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Tournament after suffering a 56-47 decision to the Bulldogs of Bowie State University at the Bojangles Coliseum.
The No. 5 seed Lady Bears (6-23) trailed 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and in the second quarter, Shaw had an opportunity to cut the deficit to two points with seconds left before halftime but a missed fast break layup with 17 seconds left in the first half resulted in a 3-pointer from Lisa Jing at the buzzer that would give BSU (18-8) the 27-20 advantage at intermission which shifted momentum in favor of BSU.
In the third quarter, Shaw trailed by as many as 14-points (38-24) after BSU used a 11-4 run but the Lady Bears managed to maneuver a 4-1 spurt to trim the deficit to single digits heading into the fourth quarter.
Senior Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) opened up the final stanza with a huge 3-pointer to bring Shaw within six (43-37) but the Bulldogs then gathered two back-to-back 3-pointers of their own to extend their lead to 12 with 7:46 left in regulation. The Lady Bears clawed back within seven, 54-47 with a 10-5 run with just 39.2 seconds remaining but Kiara Colston sank two free throws with 11 seconds left to provide the final points of the game and seal the 56-47 win for the Bulldogs.
The teams were fairly even shooting wise with the Bulldogs having the slight advantage, making 19-of-57 shots (33.3-percent) to Shaw's 16-of-49 (32.7-percent). The Bulldogs were 13-16 from the free throw line (81.3-percent) while the Lady Bears made 13-of-20 (65-percent). Bowie State also held a 39-36 rebounding edge.
The Lady Bears were led by both freshman guard Emily Davis (Cleveland, OH) and sophomore center Lervencia Johnson (Many, LA) who finished with 12 point apiece. Johnson recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
Kyah Proctor led all scorers with 19 points, three rebounds and two assists while Sade Chatman added 10 points and six rebounds. The Bulldogs, the No. 4 seed of the North will move on to the second round of the tournament with a matchup versus the No. 1 seed of the South, Fayetteville State University on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 4:30 p.m. inside the Bojangles Coliseum.
