LADY BEARS FALL AT JOHNSON C. SMITH

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It's been an extremely tough season for the Shaw University women's basketball who suffered a 79-51 decision to Johnson C. Smith University in their 2017-18 regular season finale on Saturday afternoon in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest. The setback concluded the Lady Bears (6-22, 3-13 CIAA) regular season campaign with a 2-8 record in the division (5th place) while JCSU (18-9, 10-6 CIAA) improves to 7-3 in within the South for second place.

It's highly likely that Shaw will participate in the 2018 CIAA Basketball Tournament as the fifth seed of the South and will compete on Tuesday, Feb. 27 during the first round of the tournament against the No. 4 seed of the North, possibly Lincoln (Pa.) University or Virginia State University.

Senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) scored a team-high 14 points and six rebounds. Senior Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL) and freshman Emily Davis (Cleveland, OH) both scored nine points apiece for Shaw.

The Lady Bears were outscored in every statistical category, including 56-15 from the bench, 44-26 in the paint, 15-7 in second chances, 16-8 in fast breaks and 30-5 in points off of turnovers.

JCSU took a 7-0 lead to start the contest off, the Lady Bears finally got on the scoreboard on jumper from senior Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL) to cut the deficit 7-2 with 8:27 on the clock. The Golden Bulls put together a 10-5 run to lead 17-7 over the Lady Bears after one quarter.

With a 12-point deficit in the second quarter, Shaw cut the lead to single digits on two free-throws from sophomore Lervencia Johnson (Many, LA) and a jumper from freshman Micah Browne (Trinidad) but the Golden Bulls orchestrated a 13-4 in a span of 5:00 to lead 40-21 at halftime.

The energy picked up for the Lady Bears in the second half as they trailed a scoring margin of 19-15 to JCSU in the third stanza but ultimately, the Golden Bulls created separation from Shaw after producing 23-point lead in the third quarter which carried over in the fourth and it eventually became too much for the Lady Bears to overcome in the end.

Jasmine Carter led JCSU in scoring with a game-high 22 points, four rebounds and three steals while Malia Rivers added 18 points and six rebounds.

The 2018 CIAA Basketball Tournament will be held in Charlotte, NC at both the Bojangles Coliseum and the Spectrum Center beginning on Feb. 27 through Mar. 3.
