LADY BEARS FALLS TO FAYETTEVILLE STATE IN HOME FINALE

RALEIGH, N.C. – With only six players dressed tonight, the Shaw University women's basketball team put up a good fight but the Lady Bears ran out of gas in a physical battle in the second half for a 66-56 setback to the visiting Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos on Wednesday afternoon in C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium on senior night.

The Lady Bears (6-21, 3-12 CIAA, 2-7 South) got a lot from their six players, including a career-high 15 points, five rebounds and three assists from freshman guard Emily Davis (Cleveland, OH). Senior guard Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) tallied 10 points while junior guard Tahniya Sweatt (Pasadena, CA) chipped in career-high 11 rebounds and nine points, following senior forward KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) with 10 rebounds, nine points and career-high five steals in the loss.

Shaw recognized five seniors following the conclusion of the women's game; those seniors included senior guard Aliyah Cooley (Brooklyn, NY), senior guard Julia Cordova (Phoenix, AZ), senior guard Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL), Kellow and Martin.

The Lady Bears took a 21-15 lead in the first quarter before both teams scored 13 points apiece in the second as Shaw went into the locker room with a 34-28 lead at halftime.

FSU (15-9, 10-5, 9-0 South) opened up the third stanza with a 12-5 run to take a 40-39 lead over Shaw with 3:58 remaining but the lead would change twice before the game ended up being tied for the third time of the night after FSU hit a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter.

Tied at 45-45 to begin the fourth quarter, the Lady Broncos used a 16-5 scoring margin that would give them an 11-point (61-50) advantage over Shaw with 4:56 left in regulation. Shaw trimmed at the deficit to pull within single digits twice but the Lady Bears went on a cold from the field for the remainder of the way.

Two players scored a team-high 12 points for the Lady Broncos that included Jamesha Mosley and Shantel Bennett. Bennett also recorded seven rebounds and four assists while Noni Kuumba finished with 10 points for FSU.

For the contest, FSU recorded 20 points off the Lady Bears 20 turnovers while outscoring Shaw 24-0 in fast breaks and 34-8 from their bench whom was short-handed tonight.

The Lady Bears will conclude their 2017-18 regular season with a road contest at Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in BrayBoy Gymnasium.
