LADY BEARS HEAD TO LYNN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HOLIDAY CLASSIC

RALEIGH, N.C. -  The Shaw University women's basketball team will compete in the Lynn University women's basketball Holiday Classic beginning on Sunday, Dec. 17 with a non-conference contest versus Saint Leo at 12 noon at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center in Boca Raton, Fla. On Monday, Dec 18 the Lady Bears will face the Fighting Knights at 2 p.m.

The Lady Bears (3-6) are coming of a 72-68 home victory against Elizabeth City State Thursday, Dec. 14. Senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) scored a team-best 22 points and 12 rebounds while newcomer and sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) chipped in 14 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and seven blocks to go along with four assits. Junior Racquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) contributed 11 points and senior Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL) finished with 10 points. The victory was Shaw's first conference win of the 2017-18 season.

 

Saint Leo (5-6) is coming off a 72-70 win over Johnson & Wales (NC) on Dec. 12. Alani Gallagher scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Ragen Dotsen totaled 13 points and Delaney Bernard added 10 points.

 

The last time Saint Leo and Shaw met was during the 2015-16 season where the Lady Bears defeated the Lions 65-54 also at the Lynn Holiday Classic.

 

As for the host Lynn, the Fighting Knights are 2-7 on the season so far after losing its third-straight, including a 73-62 decision to Valdosta State on Dec. 10. Paola Vazquez Concepcion scored 12 points while Jaylen Snipes groomed 11 points, five steals and six assists. Mariah Penascino rounded out double figure scoring for Lynn with 1 points and six boards in the loss.

 

Shaw and Lynn last met during the 2015-16 season where the Lady Bears took home a 76-61 win against the home team at the Holiday Classic.
