PETERSBURG, Va., - Senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) recorded her second double-double of the 2017-18 season with 18 points and 13 rebounds but the Shaw University women's basketball team dropped a 71-68 decision to Cheyney University Friday afternoon at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
The loss dropped the Lady Bears to 1-3 overall while the Lady Wolves picked up their first win on the season to stand 1-4 on the season.
Shaw opened the contest with a 5-3 lead over Cheyney but their lead was quickly erased after the Lady Wolves embarked on an 8-2 spurt to lead 11-4 over the Lady Bears at the 4:03 mark. Shaw ended up trailing by three at the end of the first quarter on a made free-throw from freshman Emily Davis (Cleveland, OH).
The Lady Bears trailed by as many as eight points in the second quarter but a 3-pointer by Taylor sparked a big run for Shaw that eventually led to a 14-0 run and a 31-25 lead with 2:22 left in the first half, however, CU would end up scoring six straight to knot the game at 31-31 at halftime.
CU put together a 7-6 scoring margin over the Lady Bears in the third quarter. The Lady Wolves held on to their lead for the remainder of the stanza despite a late basket from freshman Ladazia Burris (Mt. Holly, NC) to get Shaw within two heading into the fourth quarter.
Down 62-53 with 6:13 remaining in the contest, Shaw managed to orchestrate a 11-2 run to tie the game at 64-64 on a layup from Martin. Out of a Lady Bears timeout, CU took the lead on two free-throws from Jamyra Maye but a layup from freshman Keyonte Cherry (Rocky Mount, NC) knotted the game at 66-66 with 2:51 left to play.
On the ensuing possession, the Lady Wolves drained a three-pointer from the wing for a 3-point advantage but the Lady Bears would not go away easily with the help of an easy bucket from Burris to stay within one (69-68). With a chance to take the lead, a costly turnover from Shaw and a defensive let down from the Lady Bears allowed CU to score a layup with 18 seconds remaining for the 71-68 lead. Following a timeout and 12 seconds left, Shaw missed an opportunity to score as a defensive rebound secured the win for Cheyney.
The Lady Wolves were led by both Maye and Gianni Hill who finished with 16 points apiece. TaKayla Ellis and Marlon Herring added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Shaw will look to snap a two-game skid with a road contest at William Peace College on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
