ATLANTA, Ga., – Shaw University head women's basketball coach Jacques Curtis has his first win of the 2017-18 season and it came on the road, in a tough environment against Clark Atlanta University Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bears defeated the Lady Panthers 72-61 inside L.S. Epps Gymnasium.
Shaw is now 1-2 on the season while CAU stands 1-2, also.
Senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) recorded her first double-double on the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds while collecting five steals on the day. The Lady Bears trailed 8-5 in the opening quarter but Martin nailed a jumper at the 5:40 mark to pull Shaw within one. SU then went on an 8-0 run to stretch their lead 14-10 over CAU before taking a seven-point lead going into the second quarter (19-12).
Shaw controlled the second frame, outscoring the Lady Panthers 16-14 to lead 35-26 at halftime. CAU adjusted in the third quarter as they scored 11 unanswered points to take a two-point lead over the Lady Bears at the 6:24 mark.
Despite being outscored 26-17 in that frame, the game ended up being tied at 52 heading into the fourth. The Lady Panthers took a six-point lead after an 8-2 surge but over the next 1:30, neither teams scored until Martin drilled two free-throws to snap the scoring drought for Shaw.
After a jumper from Taylor, Martin was sent to the line where she again iced a free-throw to pull the Lady Bears within one (62-61) with 4:22 left to play. Over the net 2:00, neither teams would score until senior Chelsea Long (Melbourne, FL) drained a 3-pointer to give Shaw the 64-62 lead with 2:07 remaining. From there, the Lady Bears scored the game's last eight points to secure the victory.
Naomi Holloway led the efforts for CAU with 22 points, while Reyana Miller and Lauren Turner added 15 and 14, respectively.
