RALEIGH, N.C. – Shaw University women's basketball head coach Jacques Curtis announced the programs 2017-18 schedule on Friday. The Lady Bears are slated to play 28 regular-season contests and will match up with 13 teams in nonconference action, including three tournaments.
This year's team will look to improve upon its 2016-17 finish as the Lady Bears concluded last season's slate 11-18 overall, 8-8 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and 6-4 mark in the Southern Division. Shaw was picked to finish fifth in the CIAA and second within the division announced the conference office on Oct. 5. The Lady Bears featured one player that made the CIAA All-Preseason Team in senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) who led the squad in scoring with an average of 19.1 points per game.
The 2017-18 season begins on the road, Saturday Nov. 11, as the Lady Bears take on Shepherd and Pitt-Johnstown (Nov.12) in the Challenge Tournament hosted by Winston-Salem State.
Shaw will continue its road skid with a game at Clark Atlanta on Nov. 20 before participating in the Virginia State University Thanksgiving Tournament on Nov. 24-25 at the VSU Multipurpose Center in Petersburg, Va.
Following an away contest at William Peace on Nov. 30, the Lady Bears will have their home opener against Lenoir-Rhyne (Dec. 5) before hosting Chowan and Elizabeth City State for CIAA action Dec. 12 and Dec. 14 in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Lady Bears will head to Florida for a three-game slate, starting with participation in the Lynn University Tournament on Dec. 17 and Dec. 18 versus Saint Leo (Sunday) and Lynn (Monday) before closing out the trip with a matchup at Nova Southeastern on Dec. 19.
After returning home to host Barton (Jan. 2), Shaw will begin another road trip this time with cross division play against Virginia Union on Jan. 4, Bowie State on Jan. 6 and Lincoln (Pa.) on Jan. 8. The Lady Bears are scheduled to begin division play at Livingstone on Jan. 13 before a road contest at Paine (Jan. 17) for their regular-season finale.
On Jan. 20, the Lady Bears will welcome the Rams of WSSU, followed by a cross-town rival meeting at Saint Augustine's and Fayetteville State on Jan. 24 and Jan. 27.
For the remainder of the season, Shaw will have five of its last seven games at home including a game with VSU (Jan. 31), Johnson C. Smith (Feb. 3), LC (Feb. 7), SAU (Feb. 17) and FSU (Feb. 21). The Lady Bears will have two-road games in that stretch starting with WSSU on Feb. 10 and their final regular season contest at JCSU on Feb. 24.
The CIAA Tournament begins on Feb. 27-Mar. 3 at the Bojangles Coliseum and Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.
