LADY BEARS FALTER IN FOURTH QUARTER, SUFFERS LOSS AT FAYETTEVILLE STATE, 74-55

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – A lengthy cold spell throughout the second half ended any hopes of a comeback for the Shaw University women's basketball team Wednesday evening in a 74-55 loss to Fayetteville State University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest.  

The loss snapped a three-game win-streak for Shaw (10-17, 7-8 CIAA) as the Lady Bears fall to 5-4 within the division. FSU (7-17, 5-6 CIAA) improved to 3-6 in the South with the win tonight.

The Lady Bears scored just 11 points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-of-13 (23.1 percent) shooting from the field as the Lady Broncos ballooned to a 20-point lead on an 18-5 run with 1:26 left in the contest.

Shaw was led by sophomore Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) who scored a team-best 15 points, including 4-of-4 from the three-point line. Junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) chipped in 13 points and six rebounds while freshman Stephanie Custodio (Chino, CA) added 11 points.

In the opening quarter, Shaw trailed FSU 9-4 before the Lady Bears scored 10-straight points led by Custodio and Kellow who both had five points apiece in the run to lead 14-9 with 2:17 left. Both teams ended the quarter with a three-pointer each but Shaw held a 17-14 margin heading into the second quarter.

Shaw led up until the 2:26 mark where the Lady Broncos took a one-point lead (28-27) on a three-pointer from Tajah Clark in the second frame. FSU would lead 36-28 at the break after using a 11-1 run in the final two minutes of the first half.

The Lady Bears outscored the Lady Broncos 10-4 in the first 7:10 of the third quarter but Shaw would find themselves trailing by as many as 12 points down the stretch after FSU used a 12-2 frame to with 1:26 left. Three made free-throws by Maxwell cut the deficit to eight point but Shaw still trailed 52-44 heading into the final quarter.

FSU shot 50 percent (9-of-18) in the fourth quarter led by Shantel Bennett's eight points in the quarter. Bennett would finish the game with 19 points, five rebounds and two assists to lead the Lady Broncos in scoring. De'Aira Smith added 11 points and 12 rebounds while Breona Jones contributed 10 points, six assists and four rebounds.

Shaw will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 for its season and home finale against Johnson C. Smith University with a tipoff slated for 2 p.m. for Senior Day.
