SHAW WOMEN’S HOOPS CRUISE PAST SAINT AUGUSTINE’S, 79-49

RALEIGH, NC – Junior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) recorded her fifth double-double on the season with 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Shaw University women's basketball team to a 79-49 victory over cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University on Saturday afternoon inside Emery Gymnasium.

With the win, Shaw (10-16, 7-7 CIAA) has won its 16th consecutive game against the Lady Falcons as the Lady Bears improve to 5-3 in the Southern Division.

Three other Lady Bears joined Taylor in double figures, including senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA) with 13 points and nine rebounds. Both sophomore Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) and freshman Stephanie Custodio (Chino, CA) added 11 points apiece.

For the contest, Shaw shot 44.7 percent (21-of-47) from the field, including 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from the three-point line and 68.2 percent (30-of-44) from the free-throw line. The Lady Bears never trailed the entire contest.

The Lady Bears scored seven points off of the Lady Falcons turnovers and tallied seven points in second opportunities to groom a 25-13 margin after one quarter of action.

A basket by junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) gave Shaw a 14-point lead to start off the second quarter; however, the Lady Falcons pulled within five points (29-24) on a 11-4 run. The Lady Bears recovered by scoring four-straight to extend its lead to nine points with 4:42 left in the quarter.

Although SAU outscored Shaw 8-5 in the last 3:53 of the first half, the Lady Bears took a 37-32 stand at halftime. Taylor had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead all scorers at intermission.

In the second half, Shaw held the Lady Falcons to just 17 points total that included nine points in the third and eight in the fourth quarter while the Lady Bears combined for 42 points in both quarters to secure the win.

Kiana Clark finished with a team-best 12 points to lead SAU (3-23, 0-14 CIAA, 0-8 Division) in scoring, followed by Kelsee Arnold who finished with 11 points.

Shaw will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Fayetteville State University with a tipoff slated for 5:30 p.m.
