LADY BEARS SNAP TWO-GAME SKID, KNOCKS OFF LIVINGSTONE, 63-60

SALISBURY, NC – Three Lady Bears scored in double figures to lead the Shaw University women's basketball team to a 63-60 road victory over Livingstone College on Saturday afternoon in New Trent Gymnasium for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division showdown. The win snapped a two-game skid for Shaw as the Lady Bears (8-16, 5-7 CIAA, 3-3 Division) evened the series with the Lady Blue Bears (12-10, 7-5 CIAA, 4-2 Division).

Junior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) led the way for Shaw with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA) and sophomore Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) both added 11 points apiece while junior Julia Cordova (Phoenix, AZ) contributed eight points and five rebounds.

Defensively, Junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) collected seven rebounds, followed by Heggins and Kellow with six and four boards, respectively.

Both teams combined for a total of 40 turnovers, Shaw ended the game with 22 miscues while LC accounted for 18. The Lady Bears shot 36.8 percent (21-57) from the field, 46.7 percent (7-15) from the three-point line and 60.9 percent (14-23) from the charity stripe. Shaw outrebounded LC 45-41 and outscored the Lady Blue Bears in the first and fourth quarter by the scores of 21-14 and 21-20.

LC raced out to a 7-3 lead over Shaw in the opening minutes before the Lady Bears netted eight-straight points to take a 11-7 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter. From there, Shaw managed to outscore the Lady Blue Bears 10-7 on a 3-pointer at the buzzer from Taylor to give the Lady Bears a 21-14 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Lady Bears led by as many as eight points in the second frame but LC trimmed at the deficit to pull within one point with 4:53 showing on the clock on a 7-0 run. Two free-throws by Taylor led to a 6-0 run for the Lady Bears to go into the locker room with a 34-28 lead at halftime.

Despite scoring just eight points in the third quarter, Shaw continued to lead over the Lady Blue Bears heading into the fourth quarter with a 42-40 margin.

The fourth quarter displayed six ties and two lead changes. With 33 seconds left in the game, Cordova gave the Lady Bears a one-point lead after sinking one-of-two free-throws. On the ensuing possession, LC missed a layup that resulted in a defensive rebound for Heggins as she would go to the line for two. She would sink them both, giving Shaw a three-point lead with eight seconds remaining. The Lady Blue Bears had a chance to tie but its three-point attempt would be no good as the Lady Bears was able to snap LC's four-game win-streak with the win.

The Lady Blue Bears finished the game shooting 34.8 percent (23-66) from the floor, 29.4 percent (5-17) from long distance and 52.9 percent (9-17) from the foul line. Lovette ended the game with 22 points and 10 rebounds for LC, followed by Deonna Young with 11 points.

Shaw will return home to C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium to host Winston-Salem State University on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m.
