LADY BEARS PICK UP FIRST DIVISION WIN, 69-57, OVER RIVAL SAINT AUGUSTINE’S

RALEIGH, NC – Junior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) tied a career high with 30 points and the Shaw University women's basketball team used a 8-3 run in the last 1:41 of the game to defeat cross-town rival Saint Augustine's University, 69-57 Saturday afternoon in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division game inside C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The victory extends the Lady Bears (6-13, 3-4 CIAA) win-streak to 15-straight against the Lady Falcons as Shaw stands 1-1 within the division. SAU (3-17, 0-9 CIAA) remains winless in the division with a 0-3 mark.

Taylor scored her 30 points with 11-of-21 shooting from the floor and also added 12 rebounds. Junior Bianca Maxwell (London, England) chipped in 15 points, including 9-of-12 from the free-throw line and 12 boards while freshman Stephanie Custodio (Chino, CA) contributed 10 points, eight rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

Shaw finished the game shooting 40 percent (22-of-54), while holding the Lady Falcons to just 34 percent (22-of-64). The Lady Bears garnered 15 points off of second chances and outscored SAU's bench 21-17.

The first quarter saw Shaw take a 21-16 lead as the Lady Bears scored 11-straight to end the quarter. The second quarter featured four ties but SAU would take a two-point lead at intermission after producing a 5-3 run.

Taylor led the Lady Bears at the half with 13 points, on 6-of-10 shooting and seven rebounds. Sophomore Raquel Kellow (Conroe, TX) had eight points, including 2-of-3 from the three-point line as Shaw shot 43 percent (13-of-30) from the floor over 20 minutes.

Strong play on both ends rolled into the third quarter as both teams exchanged baskets until Shaw took a 41-40 lead on a layup from Taylor at the 4:35 mark. The Lady Bears closed out the quarter with a 12-4 run, capped off by a three-pointer from Taylor as time expired.

Although the Lady Bears never gave up its lead in the fourth quarter, SAU pulled within six points with 4:54 left but that would be the closest the Lady Falcons would get as Shaw pushed its lead to 11 points, putting the game out of reach for its rival.
