SHAW BASKETBALL TO WELCOME BOWIE STATE WEDNESDAY

RALEIGH, N.C.  – The Shaw University men's and women's basketball teams will welcome Bowie State University to C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium Wednesday, Jan. 11 for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cross division doubleheader.

The women will tip off at 6 p.m. The Lady Bears (4-12, 1-3 CIAA) are coming its first conference win on the season, defeating Lincoln, 68-65 behind junior LaQuisha Taylor's (Charlotte, NC) career-high 30 points and 17 rebounds while senior Imani Heggins (Chesapeake, VA) finished with 18 points and eight boards. Shaw is producing 63.2 points per game compared to its opponents 73.2 points per contest.

 

The Bulldogs (13-2, 5-0 CIAA) enter Wednesday's action on 10-game winning streak with its most recent win at Fayetteville State by the score of 64-50 Monday. Kyah Proctor and Pere Alexander led BSU with 19 and 16 points, respectively. As a team, the Bulldogs are averaging 60.6 points per game while its opponents are charting just 53.3 points per outing. BSU ranks eighth in the Atlantic Region.

 

This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season, Shaw defeated Bowie State 79-49 on Jan. 9, 2016. The Lady Bears lead the all-time series over the Bulldogs with an overall record of 31-20.

 

The men's game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., following the women's contest. The Bears (6-8, 2-2 CIAA) managed to snap a three-game skid with a 76-67 victory over Lincoln Monday night led by senior Benji Bell's (Gainesville, FL) 34 points. Junior Khaliq Williams (Jacksonville, FL) chipped in 10 points to round out double figure scoring for Shaw. The Bears are 3-3 at home against opponents this season.

 

The Bulldogs head to Spaulding with a 6-9 overall record but post a 3-2 mark within the CIAA. Ahmaad Wilson scored 28 points in the 80-71 loss to Fayetteville State. Enuoma Ebinum and Dayshawn Wells both tallied double digits in scoring adding 14 and 10 points, respectively. BSU is 0-2 on the road against conference opponents on the season thus far.

 

The two squads have split the season series at 23-23. Shaw has won the last two meetings, including last year's triumph win, 70-68 in Bowie, Md.

 

Following Wednesday's doubleheader, Shaw will continue its home slate with divisional play versus Livingstone College Saturday, Jan. 14. The women's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the men's game at 4 p.m.
